I’m proud to represent Derby South as your Member of Parliament. I’ve lived here all my life, and Derby has shaped everything I am. From growing up in Arboretum and Normanton, to serving my community in Sinfin ward, to working at Rolls-Royce — my story is Derby’s story.
Politics, for me, has always been about people. For more than 30 years I’ve been active in our city, supporting local charities, voluntary groups and community campaigns. I learned that sense of service from my dad, who came to Derby in the 1950s to work in the foundry and spent his life helping others feel part of community life and succeed here. His sudden passing when I was just 20 left a mark on me — and gave me the drive to follow in his footsteps and fight for fairness and opportunity for everyone.
I carried those values with me into trade union work, where I’ve spent three decades standing up for working people in Derby’s manufacturing and aerospace industries. I know what good, secure jobs mean for families, because I’ve seen it in my own life — and I know the risks when those opportunities are taken away.
As a councillor for Sinfin ward and now as MP for Derby South, I’ve always tried to be a visible, practical and straight-talking representative. Whether it’s fighting for investment in our city centre, standing up for safer streets, supporting apprenticeships, or protecting our NHS, my priority is simple: delivering for Derby.
This is my home. My wife Suki works in our NHS, our children grew up here and are training to work in healthcare too. Like every Derby family, we want safe neighbourhoods, strong services and opportunities for the next generation.
In Parliament, I’m determined to be your voice — making sure Derby is never overlooked, and that the concerns of our city are heard loud and clear in Westminster.
I’ll never stop fighting for Derby, because it’s not just my constituency — it’s my home.
