Petition against the Sinfin Lane Waste Plant..

We oppose the Sinfin Lane Waste Plant

We are against Derby City Council’s proposal to build a new waste disposal plant at the Old Tannery site on Sinfin Lane.

Sinfin residents should not suffer again just to solve the long existing problem of how to dispose of the City Council owned site.

Other reasons for opposing the project are:

* Delivery vehicles taking waste to the site will make what is now a bad traffic situation much worse and generate more air pollution.
* The Size of the Plant is excessive for Derby’s needs over 65% of the waste will be transported in from outside the city.
* No specific benefit for Sinfin residents from the plant. The Council are even refusing to allow them a credit for the electricity to be generated.

This industrial site should be placed in an area which has an adequate transport network and away from any residential properties.

We request that the Council Cabinet reject the officers’ proposal to place a plant there. We call on the relevant parties to find a suitable alternative site without delay.

    The Sinfin Waste plant

I know a good majority of the people in the Sinfin area do not want the Waste Plant built on Land near Sinfin Lane with narrow roads that are very congested and close to housing areas. I have been informed the Waste Plant could be built on Raynesway Business Park. This site is linked to the National Grid because of Spondon PowerStation, and has a direct rail line access direct in to the Business Park area so the train could move the waste to the waste-processing site from other areas of Derby and Derbyshire so reducing the number of lorry loads on Derby Roads.

The Waste plant could provide Hot Water to Business as a bi-product of creating electrical energy and the hot water produced could be piped with special insulated pipes to people homes in Alvaston, Allenton, Crewton, Chaddesden and parts of Spondon including schools so the site will help to reduce C02 being produced by Business, and local homes similar to plants in Sweden and Finland and this Waste processing plant could be used to grow crops in 3-Storey Green houses built on Business Parks so this Waste Plant could help produce local food all year round to the people in Derby. Most UK food is imported from Spain and the Euro being so high vegetables and fruit will be very high in price for the next 3 years.
    Sinfin Lane Site

The Sinfin Lane Site could have 30 Low Cost homes/flats for Derby Homes 3-4 Business units, and some of the land turned into a Park and Wildlife area with a footpath linking to the new B&Q and Sainsbury store site. Small wind turbines fitted similar size to Sinfin Community School on Arleston Lane that could generate electric power for he new houses, business unit, and streetlights in the Sinfin and areas near the new medium sized turbines.

I can see merits in using waste that cannot be recycled for a waste to energy plant however it just is not right to plonk a massive waste treatment plant on Sinfin Lane that will deal with waste from outside the area. It is clear smaller facilities can be built across Derbyshire as the developers recently opened a much smaller plant on the Isle of White.
This website suggests Sinfin should gain from this facility if built. As the planned site is close to both Normanton and Peartree these areas should also get such a gain.
I am however concerned about the fight against the plant when a leading local labour councillor expressed to me recently that this would be positive for Sinfin.

the residents of victory rd and elmtree av, have had to put up with the pollution and noise from the former qualcast, and now we dont want to be put in the same position as we have done for the last twenty years and even longer for some of the residents.this is basically another incinerator which will cause pollution and noise and more heavy traffic. the incinerator island on raynsway was especially devised for the disposal of waste, away from all residential properties therefore why can,t this be used for this proposed waste treatment plant, which would be the ideal solution having the right road infrastructure.

Great idea, wrong place. There is already enough pollution and traffic in the Sinfin area and consideration should be given for this project on land away from peoples homes. A waste treatment plant in a residential area……mmmmmm no thankyou.

  5. Karen Cadman on Tue, 6th Jan 2009 8:40 am

What other sites were taken into consideration when this choice of site was made? What precautions have been discussed to protect residents in close proximity to the site in the event of a worse case scenario, should the waste plant system fail?
Apart from the increase traffic flow on an already congested area I simply find it difficult to believe that such a scheme cannot be accommodated within a ‘business park’ i.e. Raynesway or future parks the Council may be considering, away from built up residential areas – which in my view is creating a potential hazzard.

  6. D Sharpe on Tue, 6th Jan 2009 9:25 pm

Such a facility should not be situated anywhere near residential areas whether it be Sinfin or Chaddesden, Alvaston, Spondon and Oakwood (all close to suggested area at Raynesway but all highly populated areas).

If there is the need for such a unit may I suggest the Council properly investigate more suitable sites with suitable road infrastructures and far away from residential areas.

I do not see that such a plant is beneficial to any highly populated residential area.

the volume of traffic on the ring road will be increased quite considerably. this ring road is already too busy and the increased traffic would increase the liklehood of more accidents with the number of large lorries using the road.

i think its a bad idea that there building it on sinfin lane because it is a built up area regarding planning permission if they get it itsall a big sham forthe council to make money but hear me now im not going to make it easy for them and dont forget your rubbish on the 13th for out side the council house

  9. Linda McGraw on Wed, 7th Jan 2009 8:34 pm

As above, great idea, wrong place.
See you on the Council House steps next week!
Keep up the good work Baggy, i’m right behind you on this.

  10. Stuart Sharratt on Wed, 7th Jan 2009 9:30 pm

The City Council obviously see the Sinfin lane site as the easy opportunity to deal with an area of contaminated ex industrial land. However this site is much too close to large residential areas, which are likely to be effected by undesireable emissions / noise / smells from this proposed waste plant.Add to this the devaluation of residential property & inadequate road systems to support the plants logistical requirements.A more suitable site must be found for this development & I strongly object to the City Councils apparent contempt for the residents of this ward.

  11. Kevin Thompson on Fri, 9th Jan 2009 4:48 pm

Once again our beloved City Council railroading things through with no regard for how it affects the people. I bet they didn’t consider anywhere that is close to where they live. I personally do not live near the proposed site. But I do have people I love near there. It is about time the council tax paying public really gave these politicians A ONE UNITED VOICE. Regardless of whether you vote or who you vote for. What happens to the rubbish now, can that not be extended. They would not even be considering this site if they could make money on it.

  12. Jon Eccarius on Sat, 10th Jan 2009 3:04 pm

The tannery site is a big white elephant that the city Council wants rid of, this site is seriously polluted and will cost a great deal of money to make good, thats about the only reason i can see for proposing the incinerator to be put there, the council will not be setting a precident in putting the incinerator in the midst of domestic housing, several third world countries have done the same in the past.

  13. Sarah Fletcher on Sat, 10th Jan 2009 4:41 pm

You don’t have to know much about the proposal to know it’s bad. Aside from any other concerns, the road system cannot cope with current traffic in the area and this volume is surely already destined to increase with the additional housing being built at the back of Sinfin.
To not only put something there that increases traffic (and pollution) but that is not essential* to the City and will not benefit the area or is ludicrous.
*as much of the additional traffic in and out will not be dealing with Derby waste.

  14. Sarah Fletcher on Sat, 10th Jan 2009 4:45 pm

Well said Steve Pete – Jan 1st.

  15. Sarah Thompson on Sat, 10th Jan 2009 8:11 pm

What can i say its nothing more than a silly idea. for the main reason that this area is a residential area, my concerns are for the health of myself and others in th area, i feel that not much thoght has been put into the location of the plant and sinfin would be the easy option, well we have news for all at the council we will not be shushed, our voices will become one to object to these plans, im with you all the way, come on sinfin lets show them what we are made of.

  16. Simon Bacon on Sun, 11th Jan 2009 12:32 am

The councils came together to cook up this idea. By building one giant facility to take waste from the city and beyond overall potentially they have a smaller bill to split between themselves. The downside of this is the councils play Russian Roulette with residents as to where the plant ends up. I understand one company in the proposal planned a waste plant in Sinfin and the other proposed one in Alfreton. By selecting the company that chose Sinfin its the Derby residents that loose out.
A number of people are suggesting Raynesway as an alternative site. Is this really an option considering the council have thought about putting the gypsy camp there. They wouldnt get away with both !
In my view any waste plant in Derby should only deal with Derbys waste. Likewise a waste plant in Derbyshire should not handle Derby cities waste.

  17. scott thompson on Mon, 12th Jan 2009 11:22 am

they are out side my house now taking measurment of sinfin lanes road now dont you think it a bit to late for that when it goes to planning permission tomorow

  18. Simon Bacon on Wed, 14th Jan 2009 8:57 pm

What a great protest before the cabinet meeting and topped off with getting kicked out of the council chamber !
Some concerned Derby residents have now launched a facebook group to help to build awareness of the issue.
Its called No incinerator on Sinfin Lane – our health matters!
All facebook members please join up and have your say !

  19. Louise Noble on Wed, 14th Jan 2009 9:18 pm

I for one am fed up with Sinfin being used as a dumping ground for this councils bright ideas . Its not a case of this not being on our doorstep it should not be on any ones .We need to fight this being moved away from any residential .

  21. victoria asprey on Fri, 16th Jan 2009 9:57 pm

A complete joke!!! Another bright idea from the council to make money!!! No consideration of anyone but themselves. I bet they wouldn’t like to live near such a place!!! But hay what do they care, as long as they’re making money!! And as for the threat in increasing council tax fees, well again, no surprise there either. We pay our taxes, for nothing to be done; streets to be litterd, bin’s not emptied, streets still full of crime and drugs, so go on up the council tax again, we still say NO to the incinerator!!!

  22. Leigh Asprey on Fri, 16th Jan 2009 10:00 pm

Idiots, complete money making idiots. What about our children and the local environment???? Its about time the council heard what we are saying, rather than ignoring us, we are the people of Derby, we pay the taxs to keep you in jobs, and without us, you would be nothing. The children of today are the children of tomorrow, and remember that!!!

keep up all the good work

    I think its a rubbish idea:P

  25. Richard Hill on Fri, 23rd Jan 2009 5:14 pm

Ok So we Know its a bad for the area in terms of health of the residents and their children (I am one BTW), and it will pollute the air and ground, encourage vermin, flies and produce a smell. and will have an impact on house prices. Then there is the (claimed!) 10% increase in traffic. 10% of what! 10% of 100 is only 10 but 10% of 1000 is 100!! they should be more precise. Values such as traffic, volume / type per hour / time of day. would be more meaningful.

we all know Sinfin is “out of sight out of mind” as far as the bunch of social misfits in the Council house will have it, and they will try to ride rough shod over us and ignore our voices.

So what about the business in the area, do they have a take on this ?.

We have sainsburys / KFC / Mc.D’s / milk depot, oast house, and Pizza hut. All food retailers and all within striking distance of vermin and flies. Then there’s B+Q a bowling ally, reckitt’s and RR and others, we need them to speak up too.

Any thought into how we are going to transmit / benefit from the “free” electricity generated ?

Pylons in back yards, not for me please, reduction in electricity bill as we are now a net exporter of power to the grid, I cant see it my self!!

    Rant over !!

  26. Helen on Tue, 10th Feb 2009 3:42 am

I live on sinfin lane, the traffic is bad enough already, day and night. Didn’t move to the area to live next door to a waste plant and die early in life due to pollution (If this does get the go ahead, dig my grave now!!!)
The Council forgets that we voted them in to look after us and that we will vote them out again if they don’t! They need to remember who voted for them and that they are answerable to us. So DCC stop being selfish and thinking about yourselves all the time, put this plant somewhere where it won’t be harmful to the local community(and so close)

  27. sinfin neighborhood on Mon, 6th Apr 2009 7:12 pm

leave our SINFIN alone. we don;t want rubbish from all over uk to be dumped on our door step. go and build somewhere else. not welcomed here!!!
